Muscle Pain / Trigger Points - Symptoms
Trigger points can cause pain and tightness in a muscle and
predispose muscles to injuries. They can also refer pain to
another area of the body, mimicking knee pain, hip pain, etc.
An example of a common trigger point occurs in the Sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle. It is a large muscle on boths sides of the neck. It attaches to the side of the skull behind the ear and to the collarbone and breastbone. It acts to rotate and bend the the head.
Trigger points in this muscle may mimic ear and eye pain, chin pain, face pain and/or sinus pain. It is a common cause of headaches. Palpation of this muscle for tender areas that cause pain in any of these other areas strongly suggests a trigger point diagnosis.
