Disc Herniation / Disc Bulge
Between the vertebra in your spine are discs made of outer fibrous layers (think of the inside of a golf ball) and an internal gelatinous nucleus (think of a jelly doughnut). The classic disc injury occurs with a combination of heavy lifting and twisting.
The outer fibers of the disc will tear with injury and the disc
will bulge. It usually bulges into an area of the spinal
canal where it can irritate nerves. If several layers of
fibers tear, the gelatinous fluid in the nucleus will leak out into
the spinal canal. This is a disc herniation, also known as a
disc rupture.
