Auto Injuries / Whiplash

Whiplash injuries are a common result of automobile crashes but are not restricted to them.   Whenever the head is suddenly jerked back and forth beyond its normal limits, the muscles and ligaments supporting the spine can be overstretched or torn.

Common symptoms include stiffness, headaches, dizziness, numbness and tingling, blurred vision, altered memory, ear ringing, nausea, difficulty swallowing, and back, neck, jaw or shoulder pain.

Some of the symptoms above may be attributable to other conditions such as a brain injury (concussion).   It is important to diagnose accurately.   For example, a concussion involves a referral to a neurologist.

Dr. Hume has had extensive post graduate training in diagnosing and treating whiplash injuries.  She taught the course Spinal Trauma to the Chiropractic students at Palmer Chiropractic School-West.   She also has Advanced Certification of Competency in Whiplash and Brain Injury Traumatology from the Spine Research Institute of San Diego.

Treatment involves quickly decreasing the swelling and restoring normal range of motion as the tissues heal.   Adjustments, use of ice, ultrasound, electrotherapy, muscle work, nutrition, and exercise may be used.
